Service Learning
Service learning will be required for students entering the institution in 2003 and has been added to the college catalog. Education majors will be required to complete 75 hours of service learning prior to admission to program, 25 hours post admission. Letters will be mailed to agencies this summer, and students will be provided a list of approved sites.
PLATO
A purchase agreement has been developed with Plato learning for student on-line PPST preparation. The cost for this program is $700 per year, and the program is continually upgraded. Only one individual may be logged on at a time, however, the use from home is unlimited. Plato will send a trainer to work with faculty in the fall. The practice tests are diagnostic and can determine specific problem areas. This can serve as a good assessment tool for curricular changes.
Partnerships Project
A Partnerships Council comprised of representatives from
each Partnership school and the Education Division has been formed. A group of eight educators attended the
National Professional Development School Conference in
A course for cooperating teachers was offered for the first time this spring. These teachers received a stipend for attending the training and accepting a student teacher in their classroom.
It is hoped that more counties and schools will participate in the project, however, the Partnership grant will expire this year. Dr. Badgley suggested the possibility that recognition may be one form of payment. Possibly the teachers could be designated adjunct clinical supervisors, receive library status, etc. Donna Barksdale also believes that recognition is under- valued and agrees with Dr. Badgley. Larry Keaton suggested that the media cover the project in the future.
Title II
The 2002 Title II Report is now available on the web. Hard copies are also available.
NCATE
The NCATE visit is scheduled for the first week in November, 2004. Program reviews are due in September. Faculty have attended ACTE sponsored NCATE review workshops. Cindy Kelley has started on the preliminary internal report, and all syllabi have been reviewed. A NCATE orientation session will be attended by education faculty.
Field Experience Fee
A fee of $17 per credit has been added for education classes which have a field experience component. The total cost of this fee upon program completion is $408. Joe Badgley moved to approve the fee; Dotty Muir seconded. Motion approved unanimously.
State Department Update (Serena Starcher)
Alternative certification has been shelved at this time.
Early submission of fingerprint cards for new graduates appears to be going smoothly.
Policy 5100 and 5202 will be going out for approval May 15. Workshops on policy changes will be conducted at RESAs the first week of August.

Web Site Update
Tina Edwards has worked with Nancy Reese to update the Education Division home page. The home page will contain the education mission, philosophy, and logo and pillars with links to the calendar, program requirements, faculty, resources, NCATE, and Title II Report. This site should be user friendly and will be approved through the communication director at WVU-P. This site will also be home of the virtual document room for NCATE.
