Celebrating
the Community 's Commitment
In 1961, 104 area students began attending a college branch established in a Wood County Schools’ condemned elementary school building on Emerson Avenue. Today, that branch has evolved into a regional campus of West Virginia University with more than 3,800 students enrolled in certificate, associate and baccalaureate programs.
State-supported higher education began in Parkersburg in 1961 with the development of the branch campus of WVU, evolved to the establishment of a free-standing community college (Parkersburg Community College) and has come full circle with West Virginia University at Parkersburg serving as a regional campus of the University since 1989.
WVU Parkersburg observed it 45th anniversary with a series of activities during the week of October 1, 2006. The year-long anniversary's theme: “Celebrating the Community’s Commitment.”
